Slack's built-in status tools vs Don't Interrupt: what Slack leaves out

Slack's calendar apps say “In a meeting” without the meeting name, and scheduled statuses are one-off. Don't Interrupt fills the gaps and adds Teams.

  • Shows the meeting name Slack's help pages say the calendar apps' status won't include it. 1
  • Do Not Disturb that follows your calendar Slack's calendar app pages don't describe it. 1
  • A status that repeats by itself Scheduled statuses are one-off windows, up to five at a time. 3
The short answer

Slack's calendar apps set “In a meeting” without the meeting name, scheduled statuses are one-off windows, and the calendar apps' help pages don't describe Do Not Disturb tied to your calendar. Don't Interrupt fills those gaps, repeats your status on a schedule, and adds rules, several workspaces and Microsoft Teams, alongside the Slack tools you already use.

Why choose Don't Interrupt

  • You want the meeting name, or your own wording, in your status.
  • You want Do Not Disturb to follow your calendar, and a status that repeats after hours and at lunch.
  • You use Microsoft Teams as well, or more than one workspace.

When Slack's built-in tools makes sense. Slack's built-in tools are enough if “In a meeting” is all your status needs to say. They're free and they work alongside Don't Interrupt: keep the notification schedule and let Don't Interrupt write your status.

“I can't think of any other piece of technology that brought me as much mental peace at work as Don't Interrupt. All my Slack notifications are silenced when I'm in a meeting and I can pay attention to what is being discussed.”
Jairam Chandar, Engineering Manager, Meltwater

Use them together

Keep Slack's notification schedule: it works on the clock and doesn't clash with anything. Switch off the Slack calendar app's status sync if you want Don't Interrupt to write your status. A status the calendar app set isn't one Don't Interrupt set, so Don't Interrupt treats it as yours and leaves it alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does Slack put the meeting name in my status?

No, not with its Google Calendar and Outlook Calendar apps. Slack's help pages say your status will not include the name of the meeting.

How many scheduled statuses can I have in Slack?

Up to five at a time, each with a start and end time. Slack's help describes them as one-off windows and doesn't document a way to repeat them.

Is Slack's notification schedule free?

Yes. It is available on all plans including Free. You can set every day, weekdays or custom times for each day, and admins can set default hours.

Do I need to remove Slack's calendar app to use Don't Interrupt?

Switch off its status sync. Otherwise the status it sets stays in place, and Don't Interrupt treats a status it didn't set as yours.
